Best Microwave Popcorn: Top Picks for Flavor, Texture, and Easy Movie Nights

Choosing the best microwave popcorn is harder than it looks. The supermarket shelf is packed with familiar names, store brands, “movie theater” varieties, lighter options, organic choices, and extra-butter versions. Yet the differences can be surprisingly noticeable once the bags are actually popped.

Recent taste tests make one thing clear: there is no single popcorn that wins every category. A March 2026 Washington Post blind test of 12 popular brands gave the top score to Jolly Time Simply Popped Butter, while 2025 tests from Serious Eats and Delish both favored Kirkland Signature overall. Sporked, after tasting 25 bags, rated Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter especially highly.

That disagreement is useful rather than confusing. It shows that the right choice depends on what you want from your popcorn: authentic butter flavor, a lighter texture, simple ingredients, a big family-size box, or the closest thing to cinema popcorn.

Here are the options that stand out most strongly from current testing and product research.

The Best Microwave Popcorn Overall

For this guide, the strongest overall choice is Jolly Time Simply Popped Butter.

The biggest reason is its performance in The Washington Post’s March 2026 blind tasting. Ten tasters sampled 12 brands without knowing the identities, judging appearance, aroma, texture, and flavor. Jolly Time Simply Popped Butter finished first with a score of 60 out of 100, narrowly beating Orville Redenbacher’s Butter at 59. Tasters liked its airy, puffy texture, mild sea-salt profile, and more natural-tasting butter character.

The ingredient list also helps explain why it stands apart. Jolly Time says Simply Popped Butter contains whole-grain non-GMO popcorn, palm oil, clarified butter, sea salt, ascorbic acid, and rosemary extract. The company lists 35 calories and 50 milligrams of sodium per cup popped, with no added sugar.

That combination makes it a particularly strong choice for people who want recognizable butter flavor without the aggressively greasy or heavily seasoned character found in some movie-theater-style bags.

There is an important caveat: taste is subjective. Someone who wants a very bold, artificial movie-theater flavor may prefer another option.

Best Movie-Theater Style Popcorn

For a more classic cinema-style experience, Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater Butter is one of the safest choices.

Delish’s 2025 taste test specifically selected Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater Butter for its movie-theater category, with editors praising its combination of salt and butter and its similarity to the familiar flavor of popcorn served at cinemas.

Orville itself says its microwave lineup includes Movie Theater Butter along with several other varieties, and the company describes the brand as using high-quality, non-GMO popcorn and natural-source ingredients across leading varieties.

This is the bag to consider when your priority is nostalgia rather than a minimalist ingredient list. It is designed to taste like the popcorn many people expect during a movie, with a more pronounced buttery profile.

Best Bulk Option

Kirkland Signature Microwave Popcorn remains one of the strongest choices for households that want a large supply.

Serious Eats named Kirkland Signature its overall winner after a blind test of nine butter-flavored microwave popcorns in 2025. The testers particularly liked its buttery, dairy-forward flavor and fluffy texture.

Delish reached a similar conclusion in its 2025 testing, naming Kirkland Signature Movie Theater Butter its best overall. Editors highlighted its texture, crunch, balanced flavor, and especially its 44-bag box.

Costco currently lists the product as a 44-count box of 3.3-ounce bags and identifies it as whole grain and gluten-free, with a natural butter flavor.

Interestingly, The Washington Post had a less enthusiastic result in its 2026 test, where Kirkland tied for sixth place. The panel still liked its fluffy texture, but several tasters found the flavor too muted.

That difference illustrates why taste-test results should be treated as informed opinions rather than universal rankings.

Best for a Simpler Ingredient Profile

For shoppers who pay close attention to labels, SkinnyPop Butter is worth considering.

Delish selected SkinnyPop Butter as its better-for-you favorite in its 2025 testing. Editors liked its relatively minimal ingredient approach and noted that it avoids common additives such as artificial colors, artificial flavors, and preservatives.

That does not automatically make it the healthiest popcorn for everyone. The Washington Post’s 2026 tasting found it noticeably salt-forward despite its lighter positioning, while the panel gave it a lower taste score than several traditional buttery brands.

So the more accurate way to view SkinnyPop is this: it is a good choice for someone who prioritizes a simpler-feeling product and lighter overall character, but it is not automatically the winner on flavor or sodium.

Best Budget-Friendly Pick

Newman’s Own Touch of Butter deserves attention when price and a straightforward flavor profile matter.

Delish named it the best budget-friendly pick in its 2025 testing. Editors described it as corn-forward and balanced, with neither an overpowering butter taste nor excessive saltiness.

Newman’s Own describes the product as whole-grain popcorn with sea salt and natural butter flavor, designed for a subtle buttery taste rather than an extremely rich one.

That makes it a good middle ground for shoppers who want something familiar without going all the way toward highly seasoned movie-theater popcorn.

Best for a Strong Movie-Theater Flavor

For people who want popcorn that tastes unapologetically like cinema popcorn, Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter is a standout.

Sporked’s large tasting of 25 microwave popcorn bags gave Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter a 9.5/10 and its “Best of the Best” designation. Its reviewers particularly praised the balance of salt and butter and its ability to mimic the flavor profile of movie-theater popcorn.

That result differs from The Washington Post, which placed standard Pop Secret Butter third in its 2026 test and described it as pleasant but fairly unremarkable. The difference may partly reflect the specific Pop Secret product tested, as well as the different tasting methods and panel preferences.

In other words, Pop Secret is a particularly interesting example of why product names and flavor variants matter when comparing popcorn.

What Makes a Microwave Popcorn Actually Good?

A good bag needs more than a strong butter aroma.

Texture is one of the biggest differentiators. Serious Eats says the ideal popcorn should have a crisp exterior, a light and fluffy interior, enough salt to be satisfying without becoming overwhelming, and a fresh toasted-corn flavor rather than a scorched taste.

Popping consistency matters, too. Even a delicious seasoning mix is frustrating when half the bag remains unpopped or the cooked kernels become tough. Recent tests from Parade and The Washington Post both paid attention to unpopped kernels and texture alongside flavor.

The amount of seasoning is another personal preference. Some people want a gentle butter-and-salt coating that leaves room for the natural corn flavor. Others want the bright, rich and highly seasoned taste associated with movie theaters.

That is why “best” should really mean best for a particular eating style.

Is Microwave Popcorn Healthy?

Popcorn itself can be a nutritious whole-grain snack, but the nutritional profile changes considerably once oils, butter flavorings and salt are added.

The American Heart Association identifies popcorn as a whole grain and includes popcorn among snack options, especially when it is air-popped or prepared with a nontropical vegetable oil.

Harvard’s Nutrition Source also includes popcorn among satisfying snack choices that can fit within a diet emphasizing whole foods, whole grains, and fiber.

The important point is to check the Nutrition Facts panel rather than judging a product by its marketing. One bag can contain multiple servings, and two brands with similar-looking packaging may have different amounts of sodium, saturated fat and calories.

For example, Jolly Time Simply Popped Butter lists 35 calories and 50 milligrams of sodium per cup popped, but the full bag contains about 10 cups popped, according to the manufacturer’s serving information.

That makes portion size just as relevant as the numbers printed per serving.

What About PFAS in Microwave Popcorn Bags?

PFAS is a topic that often appears in older discussions about microwave popcorn packaging, but the regulatory picture in the United States has changed.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced in February 2024 that grease-proofing substances containing PFAS were no longer being sold for food-contact use in the U.S. market. The FDA specifically identified microwave popcorn bags among the types of packaging where those substances had historically been used.

That does not mean every popcorn bag sold in every country is automatically identical or that consumers should assume every product has been independently tested for PFAS. In fact, a 2026 PFAS-focused popcorn ranking notes that its scores are model-based rather than laboratory certifications, and it explicitly says that a missing manufacturer statement is not proof that a product contains PFAS.

For most shoppers, the sensible approach is to avoid outdated blanket claims and rely on current manufacturer information and applicable food-packaging regulations.

How to Get Better Results From Any Microwave Popcorn

Cooking technique can make a surprisingly large difference.

Do not blindly rely on the microwave’s popcorn preset. Jolly Time notes that microwave wattage varies and recommends using the package instructions while listening for the popping to slow.

Orville recommends stopping when there are roughly two to three seconds between pops. It also warns that overcooking can scorch the popcorn and advises opening the bag carefully because it may contain hot steam.

The best practical rule is simple: stay nearby, listen to the popping, and stop the microwave as the popping slows rather than waiting for every final kernel.

Freshness matters as well. Jolly Time says older popcorn tends to pop less effectively because popcorn kernels need the right moisture content to create steam pressure inside the kernel.

Which Microwave Popcorn Should You Buy?

For most people, Jolly Time Simply Popped Butter is the strongest starting point because it combines a highly rated recent blind-test performance with a relatively simple ingredient profile and a light, fluffy texture.

Choose Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater Butter when you want a familiar cinema-style taste. Kirkland Signature is especially appealing for families or frequent popcorn eaters who value large boxes and have access to Costco. SkinnyPop Butter makes sense for shoppers who prioritize a simpler ingredient profile, while Newman’s Own Touch of Butter is a sensible budget-oriented choice.

Ultimately, there is no single bag that wins every palate. Current testing shows that several brands can produce excellent results, and the biggest decision is whether you prefer natural butter flavor, classic movie-theater intensity, lighter seasoning, or the best value for your pantry.
